Morgen geht es wieder nach Hause, daher musste ich mich heute vom immer noch regnerischen Katoomba wieder aufmachen in Richtung Sydney. Als ich mich in den Zug setzte, fiel mir (erneut) auf, dass der Sitz mir gegenüber doch recht knapp vor mir stand. Falls sich da jemand hingesetzt hätte, hätten wir wohl nicht gewußt, wie unsere Füße verteilen. Und während ich mich noch darüber wundere, steigt eine junge Frau ein, packt die Rücklehne, hebt sie etwas an und verschiebt sie einfach in meine Richtung, so dass ich die Rückenlehne vor mir und sie viel Platz für ihre Füße hat – eine geniale Erfindung, vor allem für die Leute, denen beim Rückwärtsfahren schlecht wird – einfach die Rückenlehne versetzen und schon sitzt man richtig herum. Tolle Erfindung, Australien, insbesondere die Intercity-Züge sind also für diese Menschen sehr zu empfehlen.

In Sydney angekommen, war ich etwas unschlüssig, was ich mit den wenigen Stunden, die mir hier noch bleiben, anfangen sollte. Nachdem ich mich nochmal ins Stadtleben gestürzt hatte (am Quai lag bereits das nächste Riesenkreuzfahrtschiff), suchte ich dann doch wieder etwa Ruhe im botanischen Garten und habe dieses Mal recht auffällige Achtfüssler fotografiert (wer eine Spinnenphobie hat, sollte das Foto ganz unten lieber nicht anschauen). Die Tierchen sind wirklich farbenfroh und haben eine Körperlänge von etwa 4-5 cm. Nach einem kleinen Bummel durch das Victoria-Shopping-Zentrum (absolut zu empfehlen für Nostalgiker wie mich, siehe https://www.sydney.com/things-to-do/fashion-and-shopping/city-centre-shopping) fuhr ich noch zum Bundi Beach, einen der schönsten Strände Sydneys, und ging dort ein wenig spazieren. Eigentlich kann man von dort aus auch schön wandern gehen, aber es wurde schon spät und ich hungrig, also fuhr ich per Bus und Bahn nochmal zur Rushcutters Bay, wo ich bei meinem ersten Aufenthalt in Sydney übernachtet hatte.

Bundi Beach

Das Ausgeh- und Vergnügungsviertel um den Kings Cross Bahnhof lohnt sich wirklich, entlang der Straßen und Seitengässchen findet man viele verschiedene Kneipen und es gibt auch ein paar anrüchige Örtlichkeiten, vor denen volltätowierte Aufpasser stehen (und das bereits gegen 18:30 Uhr). Man kann aber auch einfach in eine nette Kneipe sitzen, ein frisch gezapftes „Lager“ (oje, wieder 10$) trinken, dazu ein im Vergleich zur Innenstadt günstiges Abendessen bekommen und die entspannte australische Pub-Stimmung ein letztes Mal genießen.

Morgen früh steige ich wieder in den Flieger. Meine Zusammenfassung? Australien war faszinierend, spannend, wunderschön und definitiv eine Reise wert, auch wenn – zumindest so wie ich gereist bin – der Geldbeutel dabei ganz schön strapaziert wurde. Für mich, die ich so gerne fotografiere und auch gerne alleine unterwegs bin, ist es auch ein sicheres Land, zumindest habe ich mich zu keinem Zeitpunkt irgendwie gefährdet gefühlt. So wie ich mich hier alleine herumgetrieben habe, hätte ich mich nie in Südafrika bewegt (wo ich schon viele Male war).

Ich habe Euch nur wenige von den erlebten Geschichten erzählt und auch nur wenige Fotos ausgewählt – ich hoffe aber, die Auswahl hat Euch gefallen und dass Ihr vielleicht um Pfingsten wieder reinschaut, wenn ich (spätestens) von meiner nächsten Reise berichte: die geht gar nicht so weit weg in den Pfälzer Wald.

23.3.2018 A last (half a) day in Sydney

As my flight back home leaves tomorrow morning, I had to return from Katoomba to Sydney today. In the train, I made an interesting discovery: while I was still wondering, why the seat in front of me was actually too near to cope with someone sitting across (because we would not know where to put our feet), a young lady got in, lifted the backrest up and moved it into my direction, so that she was sitting with the back to me. Wow! I’ve never seen something like that before and remembered the many people I know that hate to sit with their backs to the direction of the train because this makes them feel sick. Those people would never have any problems in Australian intercity trains.

As I only got a couple of hours left before dark, I first jumped into the city life — and out after an hour seeking some rest in the Botanic Gardens again. The ones of you with arachnophobia should better not look at the bottom of this page, for I found a very big (body length about 4-5 cm) colourful kind of spider there this time. After some walking around I made my way to the trains again and after a short walk through the Victoria shopping centre (which is a must for nostalgic persons like me, see https://www.sydney.com/things-to-do/fashion-and-shopping/city-centre-shopping), I went to one of the most beautiful beaches of Sydney: „Bundi Beach“ with its many surfers, an awsome view.

One could indeed go for a hike along the coast there, but it became late and I became hungry, so I hopped onto the bus back to Bundy Junction and took the train to Kings Cross for I wanted to spend an evening in the Rushcutters Bay quarters one more time (I stayed in that area before I went to Katoomba). The many small roads around the train station are not only filled with many different kinds of pubs and restaurants, you can also find other kinds of amusement there as well. That’s the places where tatooed and a bit dangerous looking guys stand in front of the doors (already at 6:30 pm!). One can however just have a pint of lager (there go another 10$) and a fairly low priced dinner (compared to the inner city). I really enjoyed the relaxed Australian pub atmosphere for a very last time. 

So tomorrow morning I will be back on a plane towards Europe. My summary? Australia is definitely worth a trip, it is faszinating and really really beautiful, no matter where you go. However, travelling the way I did, it is quite costly! But I felt save at all times which is an important issue seeing that I often go out alone and in corners where there are not too many people, I couldn’t do that in South Africa (where I’ve travelled many times).

I am not able to show you all of my many photos or tell all of the many stories that I have experienced, so I really hope that you liked my selection. My next trip will be happening in May where I will be travelling into the Palatine forrest area of Germany. Will be back then, promise!
