Wo geht man hin, wenn man in Melbourne viele Vögel sehen will? In den Botanischen Garten! Und wo geht man im Botanischen Garten hin (denn dieser ist recht groß)? Richtig … man geht ins Café, das „Tea Rooms“ heißt und in dem es eine große Menge Vögel gibt, die auf Essensreste warten (siehe Fotogalerie: Australische Vögel). Kaum steht jemand auf und geht weg, stürzt sich eine große Schar Hirtenmanias auf die Teller. Sie fressen fast alles (keinen Salat). Auch die Perlhalstaube gönnt sich – sobald die Hirtenmanias satt sind, ein paar Krümel eines Muffin während der Stelzenmonarch (lt. Wikipedia auch Drosselstelze genannt) herumstelzt und melodisch dazu pfeift. Eigentlich wollte ich Australiens berühmte Papageien sehen, leider waren die gerade ausgeflogen. Aber das Purpurhuhn war am Ende eine gute Entschädigung.

Right … you visit a café (which is called „Tea Rooms“) and you’ll find dozens of birds waiting for the guests‘ leftovers (see Fotogalerie: Australische Vögel). As soon as someone stands up and leaves, quite a big group of common mynas dash at the plates. They mostly eat anything (no salad, though). The spotted dove checks whatever is left and eats some crumbs of a leftover muffin while the magpie lark (nicely called peewee, too) sings its melodical songs while stalking around. Actually, I went to look for Australia’s famous parrots, however, they were not there. But the Western Swamphen was a nice compensation.
